Defending children: a celebration of hope at Tahanan Vedruna

World Children’s Day is celebrated every year on November 20 to remember that all children have the right to live in a safe environment, free from violence, exploitation and neglect. It is also a day to raise awareness of the challenges facing children around the world, such as poverty, hunger and lack of access to education.

Joaquina de Vedruna reached out to the most vulnerable people of her time, including children and, in particular, girls. Caring for and protecting children is an essential part of our charism, as evidenced by the initiative of the Vedruna community in Tahanan that took place in early November.

On November 8, 2025, the whole day at Tahanan Vedruna was full of color and joy as we celebrated Children’s Month with the theme “Osaec-csaem wakasan: “children’s safety and rights, stand up for them”. The celebration aimed to remind everyone of the importance of protecting the rights of all children and providing them with meaningful and happy experiences.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the “Showcase of Talent and Joy”, in which the Tahanan Vedruna girls performed a play and interpretive dance, “Cura nuestras tierras”. The audience erupted in loud applause as they saw the talent and courage they showed in performing in front of the audience. Sister Judy gave a brief talk on online child sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) and reaffirmed Tahanan Vedruna’s commitment to continue to care for and guide the children under its protection. She expressed that all children are important, capable and deserve love and support. These activities helped us to develop our creativity, confidence and teamwork, while enjoying a safe and joyful environment.

To add more fun, the sisters and volunteers also prepared special snacks and gift packages for the children and parents in our neighborhood, whom we invited. Their smiles showed how happy they were to receive the surprises.

The celebration ended with an expression of gratitude to all those who helped and lent their support to make the event a success and full of joy, those who tirelessly support Tahanan Vedruna’s mission to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children.

This year’s celebration served as a reminder that all children have the right to be happy, safe and valued. At Tahanan Vedruna, they will continue to be given hope and opportunities for a brighter future.
