Empowering women and girls: Kekeli Center’s October actions

At the Kekeli Center, the month of October was a great time to deepen its mission to promote women and girls.

Pink October against breast cancer, in close proximity

As part of the fight against breast cancer, the Kekeli Center organized an awareness-raising training session for women vendors at the Hanoukopé market in Lomé.

This initiative, which is financially supported by Manos Unidas, is part of a community-based approach aimed at strengthening prevention and promoting women’s health.

The meeting provided participants with information on the causes, risk factors, early signs and detection methods for breast cancer. Through interactive exchanges and visual aids, the three gynecologists invited by the center encouraged women to adopt health-enhancing behaviors and not to neglect regular medical examinations.

Following the awareness campaign, free screenings were offered to the women present. The beneficiaries welcomed this opportunity, which allowed them to undergo essential medical check-ups, often inaccessible due to economic constraints or lack of information.

The Kekeli Center stressed that women’s health is a fundamental pillar of family well-being. By enabling mothers to take care of their health, the initiative indirectly aims to strengthen their ability to continue their income-generating activities and raise their children in a more stable and serene environment, thus contributing to their empowerment.

This action by the Kekeli Center illustrates the importance of outreach campaigns to reach vulnerable populations and raise collective awareness of public health issues.

International Day of the Girl Child: “The girl I am, the change I lead”.

As part of the International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated every October 11, the Kekeli Center intervened on the morning of Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Saint Antoine de Padoue College in Hanoukopé, Lomé, to raise awareness among students.

The Center’s team met with a hundred young students to remind them of the importance of celebrating this day and to raise awareness of the challenges faced by girls around the world, emphasizing the importance of their empowerment and respect for their fundamental rights. Special attention was also paid to prevention around the use of social networks, in order to contribute to a more responsible and safe use of these tools among young people.

The meeting concluded with an intervention by the coordinating sister, who took the floor to show her support for this initiative and to address some encouraging closing words to the students and teaching staff.
