On August 10, 2026, a strong earthquake struck various areas of Colombia, creating a situation of particular concern.
In light of this situation, Sister Patricia Osorno, Delegate for Colombia, has shared an initial report on the situation of the Vedruna communities. The Sisters, members of the Vedruna Laity, and their families are safe. However, the community in Quibdó has been particularly hard hit: the home of Sisters Begoña Fernández, Gloria Betancourt, and Karen Jaramillo sustained severe structural damage and is now uninhabitable. Currently, the sisters have been taken in by Daniela, a volunteer who shared life with the Vedruna community for many years.
We stand in solidarity and prayer with our sisters, the affected communities, and all the people of Colombia. We pray especially for the victims of this tragedy, for those working on search and rescue efforts, and for the families who are experiencing this pain today. We remain united in hope and prayer, trusting that the Lord will sustain and strengthen those who are going through these difficult times.
We invite you to read the full statement, which includes the information available so far and a message of solidarity and hope from the Vedrunamérica Family in light of this situation.
