The Vedruna Family of Europe Calls for the Right to Decent Housing on World Habitat Day

On Monday, October 5—World Habitat Day—numerous events were held throughout the Province of Vedruna Europa to advocate for the right to decent housing.

Various organizations and institutions have played a leading role in these events: the schools run by the two educational foundations, Fundació Vedruna Catalunya Educació and Fundación Vedruna Educación, as well as the Puerto Real Senior Living Center, among others.

At El Carmen Indautxu High School in Bilbao, 12th-grade students have been reflecting on decent housing in their religion class, asking questions such as, “Is a house the same as a home? “Is housing a market commodity to be speculated on, or a fundamental human right?” The entire process is described in this article.

At La Purísima School in Jaén, students from different grades have joined in these activities with a video in which they name the bricks that make up a house, to reflect together on everything that goes into building a home. In their own words, “Like Saint Joaquina, I want to lay bricks of hospitality to make our home bigger.” You can watch it at this link.

The young people of the Vedruna Vocational Youth Ministry held a gathering over the weekend leading up to October 5, dedicated to sharing their summer experiences. During the gathering, on Saturday, October 3, they listened to the manifesto prepared by the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) group, thereby expressing their support for the right to decent housing and joining in all the events held for World Habitat Day. They declare: “As young people, this is a reality that concerns and worries us, because without a home, there is no dignified life or hope.”

At the schools of the Fundació Vedruna Catalunya Educació, nearly 1,800 elementary, middle, and high school students have joined the campaign through a simultaneous activity held at all 39 schools, emphasizing that “a home is much more than just a set of walls and a roof.” The photos and video they created can be viewed on their website.
