“Look upon the sick person as the Good Jesus, and he himself will make you feel his presence, filling your hearts with joy”
Saint Joaquina de Vedruna
On June 5, 1981—45 years ago—a group of nine volunteers, including mothers and friends from the Vedruna School in San Felipe, began a work of love and mercy, driven by their dedication and commitment to the spirit of service embodied by Joaquina de Vedruna.
The goal was to visit the pediatric ward at San Camilo Hospital, spend time with the sick children, and offer them love, companionship, and entertainment, helping to fill the void left by their mothers’ absence, since the mothers were only allowed to see them on visiting days.
Today we continue to build this story, which is a beautiful mosaic that reflects the generosity of many women who have given—and continue to give—their time and affection to warmly support each child and their family as they bear the burden of illness. An experience that reveals the power of a word spoken with love, a gesture that says “I am here with you,” a silence that listens and sustains.
We now celebrate this new anniversary with hearts full of gratitude to God, who sustains and encourages us, grateful for all the people who, in one way or another, have been and continue to be part of this beautiful journey, and we renew our commitment to continue being that merciful presence of the “Good Jesus” who becomes the Good Samaritan and never passes by human suffering. We also ask for His grace and blessing to continue giving ourselves with a “love that never says enough,” as Joaquina de Vedruna teaches us through her life.
