In the morning of October 2, our Delegation House opened its doors to friends and neighbors for an inspiring and fruitful Urban Farming Orientation. There were around 50 participants, among which there were five of our sisters.
The morning began with a beautiful spiritual and communal grounding. Before the guest speakers arrived, Sr. Nelly warmly welcomed everyone and introduced our community, our Congregation, and our beloved Foundress, St. Joaquina de Vedruna. The participants then introduced themselves, weaving a sense of friendship and unity into the room. They also received and read aloud an inspiring quotation from St. Joaquina’s letters.
The orientation was organized in partnership with the dedicated staff from Quezon City Hall and centered around the program “Joy Urban Farming”, a visionary initiative by the Quezon City government. The core purpose of this program is to address food security, promote environmental sustainability, and encourage localized agriculture right in the heart of the city. By converting idle city spaces into productive green patches, the initiative empowers citizens to grow their own nutritious food, reduce household grocery expenses, and foster a deeper connection with nature and their neighbors.
During the two-hour interactive session, the Quezon City Hall staff shared invaluable, hands-on agriculture techniques tailored for urban spaces like Proper vegetable planting techniques, creating organic fertilizers and making organic juice.
To help participants kickstart their home gardens, everyone received a starter kit of seeds, a seedbed, and peat moss, and they provided us with a pack of breakfast and lunch. The event successfully strengthened our neighborhood's commitment to health, self-reliance, and care for our common home.
