There are about 200 groups of indigenous peoples in the world, numbering 476 million people. Among them is the Erumanen Menuvu tribe, whose members receive daily help from the Vedruna Family in the Philippines. For this reason, last August 5, the community paid tribute to them on the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
The celebration received the title of Kubing Program, referring to the musical instrument of the same name, which is very special for this tribe, and which had a prominent place in the celebration. It is a type of jaw harp, usually used for communication between relatives or loved ones in short distances and celebrations. You can listen to it in this video:
On the day of the celebration, the beneficiaries were able to leave before their usual time, so at 3:30 in the afternoon they began the program of the celebration. The children of the community played the Kubing instrument, performing tribal songs and dances. In addition, they also enjoyed the fun games and surprises that had been prepared for them.
Sister Rhoda Patribo, ccv, social worker, housewives and cultural teacher Lina Flora were present at the program celebration.
Every August 9, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is commemorated in recognition of the first United Nations working meeting on Indigenous Peoples that took place in Geneva in 1982. Since our community is in close relationship with members of the Erumanen Menuvu tribe, this is one of the most special celebrations for them, as it helps them to preserve their culture and reinforce their identity as an Indigenous People.
